Last summer, I missed out on visiting North Fork Potato Chips Sunflower Maze by two days. My trip was booked, but a few days of rain closed the maze earlier than expected. This year, I moved my trip up by two weeks, determined to photograph my favorite flower at the maze, and this past weekend I finally got to visit Martin Sidor Farm.
Located in Mattituck, NY on Long Island’s North Fork (one of my favorite areas to visit), the Sidor family — the makers of North Fork Potato Chips — have opened their farm to the public where they grow 20 acres of sunflowers with the hopes that they can harvest the sunflower oil for their chips.
The best way to describe the maze is absolutely breathtaking. Upon arrival, you just see massive amounts of yellow. Once inside the maze, it is just so peaceful and beautiful with row after row of sunflowers. There are many butterflies flying from flower to flower, and you don’t have to worry about the bugs since they have more than enough flowers to keep them busy. There are benches and chairs along the maze to relax and enjoy the flowers, or use it as a perfect photo opportunity.
North Fork Potato Chips Sunflower Maze is located at 8632 Wickham Avenue in Mattituck. They are planning on staying open through the end of August, as long as mother nature doesn’t make them close earlier. If you are interested in visiting, stay up to date on the maze’s openings on their Facebook page.
