Weekly Photo Challenge: Sweet

Bleeding Hearts at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson, NY. Photo by Alyson Goodman.

I was going to skip posting for the weekly photo challenge this week, since when I saw the theme of sweet, no photograph of mine stood out in my mind as one to use. But then, I thought about how much things have unfortunately changed since Wednesday afternoon, when 17 people were killed while at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and I wanted to put a different spin on the theme.

Initially, one could look at the photo and be like the image was chosen because of the shape of the bleeding heart plant, but right now, I think all of us could use some love as we mourn the loss of life and come to grips with what happened on a day when we normally would be celebrating love.

Plants, to me, represents hope. We plant bulbs in the fall with the hope that in the spring it will bud, we plant seeds in the spring with the hope that it will grow in the summer and we nurture these plants with the hope that they will survive all of the elements nature will throw at it. I hope that one day, we will live in a world where the answer will no longer be violence, that to me, would be an incredibly sweet world to live in.
