Being an avid reader I wanted to add a new feature to my site, book reviews on recent reads. Since I love getting book recommendations from others, I wanted to share my honest thoughts on books that I have read that I either loved, liked or absolutely hated.

I had such high hopes for this book since it was listed almost everywhere as one of the best books of 2015 and then I started to read it and I kept hoping it was going to get better and I would understand why every reviewer loved it so much. I hated this book and there were many times where I struggled to continue reading. The main characters Lotto and Mathilde marry when they graduate college and the story follows the ups and downs of their lives over the years. The book is split in two with the first half of the book told from Lotto’s perspective and the second part from Mathilde’s perspective. I think the main problem I had with the book was I found the characters Lotto and Mathilde completely unlikable. The second half of the book told from Mathilde’s perspective I liked a little more than Lotto’s part, mainly because you find out more about her and in some ways sympathize with her for the things that she has done.

In Everybody Rise, Evelyn Beegan has always been on the outside looking in with her socialite friends. Thanks to her job at a social networking site and her pushy mother she finds herself thrown into the elite world. Her new life and friendships becoming more intriguing and as money and power is dangled in front of her she starts to change. For a good portion of the book, I hated the character of Evelyn and really wondered if someone could be that clueless and desperate to fit in, but as the story evolved I grew to like her and was rooting for her to figure things out. Aside from my feelings on the main character, I did really like the book. It is a quick read, gives you a glimpse into high society and is great for a debut novel.

I had been seeing this book pop up on my “since you read this, you might like this” list on Amazon and each time I passed. Then Entertainment Weekly named it one of their favorite books of 2015 and I decided to give it a try. I didn’t love the book, but I didn’t hate it either, I’m not really sure how I felt about it overall. Plum is overweight and waiting until the day of her weight loss surgery. She makes a living answering fan mail for a teen magazine and notices a woman following her wherever she goes. This woman leads her to a group of women who change her life. But that isn’t the only story in this book, it also is about women killing men who have committed sex crimes. If the whole book was about Plum and how she evolves and learns to love herself, than I would have loved the book. The second story just felt oddly placed at times.

I’m always looking for book recommendations, so if you have any great books I should check out, leave them in the comments. For more books that I have read and my thoughts on them check out my Goodreads.
