Keep Calm and Carry On

I have a bit of an obsession with anything that has Keep Calm and Carry On printed on it. I think the saying is absolutely perfect and relatable in so many ways. For a design that was never suppose to be seen, it has created a pretty big following.

Originally designed in 1939 by the British government, the poster “Keep Calm and Carry On” was the third in a series of morale boosting posters during World War II, though it was never released. The first two posters were released, but the keep calm poster was only suppose to be released upon the invasion of Britain by Germany. Fast forward to 2000 when a copy was discovered at a secondhand bookshop and reprinted.

I love the simplicity of the design. The simple design of the font and the singular piece of art, the crown get the message across. The font on the original poster was hand designed. The closet font to match the original design is Avenir, but Gill Sans and Arial are also used in parodies of the poster.

You can create your own poster design here. There are more than three thousand products that come up in an Etsy search for keep calm and carry on and a Google search will show you everything from pendants to wall decals and even band-aids with the words on it.

  1. I’m in love with the saying and the simplicity of the design as well. I bought a tiny book with quotes similar to ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ when I was in London earlier this year.
